Walking and Getting Lost

One of my favorite lines is from filmmaker Werner Herzog: “The world reveals itself to those who travel on foot.” It’s why I love to walk, and why I make time to explore on foot wherever I go.

I find that the self also comes to light when I walk. It’s like a form of meditation. I become aware of all my thoughts and emotions. I am compelled to the present as I take in my surroundings, as I feel my breath quicken and my skin sweat.

Part of walking is getting lost, as Bee and I were in this photo. We were trying to find the ancient burial grounds of Nakamaya in Batanes. No matter, getting lost is half the fun. With the help of some kind Ivatans, we did eventually find our way.

As we all do.
